10-minute after-school activities for Grades 1–3 (that aren't homework)

Between pick-up and dinner there are ten good minutes. These eight ideas use them for something a child will talk about — and photograph — rather than a worksheet they'll forget.

Primary-age children still learn best by doing. The difference from preschool is purpose: they want the task to matter. Give them a job, a question or a challenge.

Teachers in Grades 1–3 use Spark's home mode to send one of these on Wednesday and build Friday's lesson from the photos that come back.

Inside Oyku

Send it home in two taps.

A teacher opens Spark, taps ‘Share as activity’, picks the class and sends. Families see a warm card with a ‘to do’ stamp, snap the result with the in-app camera, and the card flips to ‘sent ✓’. The teacher's wall fills with photos from home.

1
Share as activity
Pre-filled brief; pick the class.
2
Family snaps
Camera only. ‘to do’ → ‘sent ✓’.
3
Wall fills up
Photos back 14 / 18. Nudge gently.
Questions we get

Frequently asked, honestly answered.

How much homework should a first grader have?

Very little written work; ten to fifteen minutes of reading and a short, purposeful task at most. Activities that end in a photo back to the teacher keep families engaged without the homework battles.

How do teachers use the photos that come back?

As Friday's lesson material: a slideshow of the class's sink-or-float results, or a gallery of comic strips. The class wall in Oyku shows who's sent theirs and who might need a gentle nudge.
