Infants (under 18 months)

  • Content and awake — the ‘all is well’ photo, before 10:30
  • Tummy time, reaching, first crawls
  • Eye contact with a carer
  • Caption: what she did, not how she felt: ‘Reached for the red ring three times.’

Toddlers (18 months–3)

  • Hands in something — sensory tray, paint, mud
  • Carrying their own cup or tray
  • First parallel play beside another child
  • Caption: five words. ‘Poured without spilling. Twice.’

Preschool (3–5)

  • The moment after concentration — the finished tower, the smile
  • First friendships: two children, one book
  • Hands raised, names written, letters traced
  • Caption: the learning word plus the story. ‘Turn-taking · negotiated the red truck without help.’

Early primary (5–7)

  • Work in progress, not just displays: the spaghetti bridge mid-test
  • Leadership: the helper, the line leader, the explainer
  • Sport, drama, music — the parent rarely sees these
  • Caption: quote the child. ‘“I invented a new kind of bridge.”’
