The best conference we've seen opened with six photographs from the term, laid out on a table, tagged by learning area. The parent relaxed, pointed, asked real questions. The checklist came out at minute fifteen and took two. Nothing was skipped; everything was remembered.
The photo-first format
- 1Before: pull six to eight tagged moments from the term — one per learning area, one social, one that surprised you.
- 2Minute 0–2: ‘Here's your child's term.’ Let the parent look first.
- 3Minute 2–10: talk through each photo. What it shows; what came next.
- 4Minute 10–15: the parent's questions, which are now specific.
- 5Minute 15–18: the checklist / framework summary, briefly.
- 6Minute 18–20: one goal, one take-home activity, one thing you'd love them to photograph at home.
Why it works
Parents process images faster than frameworks, remember stories longer than ratings, and trust evidence they can see. A photo-first conference is also faster to prepare: in Oyku a per-child summary is one click; the same can be done with a folder and ten minutes.
For families who can't come
Send the six photos with two lines each and offer a ten-minute video call. It's better than the meeting they'd otherwise miss.
